High Speed Crash Kills Three on Long Island Expressway

Why is speeding so dangerous?

A recent crash in Queens left three people dead and injured eleven others. Initial reports indicate the accident was caused by a high-speed race.  The accident occurred in the early morning hours when a 2010 black Infiniti lost control and hit a divider, splitting in half.  The driver, a 25-year-old Army National Guard Sergeant, and two passengers were thrown from the vehicle and died instantly.  An Acura traveling in the same direction hit half of the Infiniti, while a dump truck coming across the scene found itself unable to stop and slammed into five other vehicles.  Eleven others were injured in the multi-vehicle wreck.  Now, investigators believe the driver of the Infiniti was racing with the driver of the Acura.  It is estimated the Infiniti was traveling at over 100 miles per hour, but further investigations are needed.

The Dangers of Speeding

We all know that speeding is illegal and could result in a fine, but is it really that dangerous?  The answer, when looking at statistics, is a definite yes.  Speeding, which includes both exceeding posted speed limits and driving too fast for road conditions, is a factor in nearly a third of all fatal motor vehicle accidents, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.  Speed-related crashes kill close to 10,000 people annually and injure hundreds of thousands more.

Driving too fast for road conditions will impair a driver’s ability to stop in time to avoid an obstacle or safely navigate turns.  Speeding additionally increases the force involved in an accident, leaving occupants vulnerable to considerable injury.  If you are injured in a crash that may have involved speeding, it is important to contact an experienced New York City car accident attorney.  Your attorney will assist in gathering evidence of the other driver’s negligent and reckless behavior in order to build a strong case seeking damages for your accident related injuries.  Injured New York car accident victims may be able to seek compensation for their medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more from the negligent driver that injured them.
