History Repeats: California Tour Bus Accident Eerily Reminiscent of 2011 NYC Crash

Did driver fatigue play a role in the Palm Springs bus accident?

In 2011, the nation was shocked when a tour bus returning from a casino struck a guardrail in the Bronx and flipped, ramming into a support pole on a sign. The accident killed 15 people and injured several others, making it one of the deadliest crashes the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has ever investigated.  Now, five years later, a strikingly similar tour bus crash on the other side of the country has left over a dozen dead.

In the California crash, another tour bus returning from a casino crashed on the highway near Palm Springs.  Many passengers were asleep at the time of the accident and awoke to screams for help.  The accident happened when the tour bus rammed into a big rig truck, killing 13 and injuring 31.  Authorities are now exploring whether these crashes share not just a parallel scenario, but a similar cause as well.

Tour Bus Driver Fatigue

Following the 2011 NYC tour bus crash, the federal board ruled that the tour bus driver was at fault.  The board determined that the accident was caused by the bus driver’s drowsiness and his employer’s inadequate policies concerning driver rest.  Investigations revealed that the bus driver had not slept more than three hours in the 72 hours leading up to the accident.

Now, investigators are amassing evidence as to the cause of the California crash.  Initial reports suggest that fatigue could also have played a role in this accident.  Authorities are looking into the possibility that the bus driver was inside the casino instead of catching up on sleep in the hours before the accident.  Other potential causes include a medical emergency or drug and alcohol use.
